BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Shade Store opened its first New Orleans showroom in the Garden District at 3523 Magazine St and it is a 1650 square foot space offering custom blinds, shades and drapery. Local consultants advise on UV protection and humidity resistant fabrics — a move aimed at serving the city's luxury housing market.  New Orleans City Business

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Drone footage from Sept 30 showed oil from the Aug 22 Smitty’s Supply explosion still spreading in the Tangipahoa River nearly six weeks later, and Gov. Landry said that starting tomorrow morning cleanup efforts will speed up—despite EPA delaying hazardous product info for five weeks.  The Lens
  • Atalco refinery discharged toxic heavy metals and red mud into local waterways near Blind River Swamp and is under state review after inspectors found levee breaches on May 29 and in early June. The company plans to fix these issues and must file its response within 60 days of receiving updated orders on Sept. 17—officials warn fines may apply.  New Orleans City Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 39,000 registered voters cast ballots during early voting as New Orleans prepares for municipal elections—this count is 22,000 more than in the 2017 mayoral race without an incumbent.  WWL-TV
  • Louisiana boards and commissions spent about $6.7M on salaries, travel, and per diems in FY 2025, according to the state auditor's report released today. The report identified 19 inactive boards—lacking meetings and members—and urged lawmakers to boost oversight.  New Orleans City Business
  • An advisory committee proposed spending about $14M from New Orleans’ Housing Trust Fund—approved by voters last year—to expand affordable rental units and ownership programs beginning next year. The plan, which includes subsidies for developers and property repairs for small multifamily projects, will go before City Council as the city addresses rising housing costs and a budget deficit.  NOLA.com
  • New Orleans officials said the return on investment for Super Bowl 59 was lower than expected due to rising service costs that strained the city's 2025 budget—city leaders will cut overtime, curb spending and boost public safety ahead of 2026.  New Orleans City Business
  • Today, New Orleans-based Civilized AI announced it raised $2M seed funding from investors such as Benson Capital + Tulane University + Austin Capital Factory + local angels to expand its AI-powered platform that will help city employees and residents get more efficient municipal services.   • Orleans Parish Criminal District Clerk Darren Lombard dropped his petition to block challenger Calvin Duncan's ads claiming he was exonerated from a 1981 murder—attorneys said the move came after a missed filing deadline and a hearing for Duncan's counter-claims will be scheduled after the Oct. 11 election.   • Today the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation invites residents to 'Go Blue' by wearing blue clothing and lighting up their homes to support local law enforcement—City Council President JP Morrell signed a declaration honoring police across New Orleans with landmarks like the Crescent City Connection illuminated blue.  Biz New Orleans

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center expanded its Metairie clinic at 2800 Veterans Memorial Blvd by adding a two-story suite with an infusion suite, a full and retail pharmacy, exam rooms and extra staff to treat patients with urologic cancers—improving care for residents in Southshore and the wider Gulf South. The expanded clinic now offers treatment for prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancers while supporting clinical trials.  Biz New Orleans
  • Ochsner Health and MD Anderson are expanding advanced cancer care today at Slidell Memorial Hospital to give patients on the Northshore access to innovative treatments, clinical trials and supportive care as part of the network's eighth center.  New Orleans City Business

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Two of New Orleans' tallest towers - the Hancock Whitney Center and 400 Poydras Street - are in loan default, placing them under special servicers. Shell Oil, which occupies about a third of the Hancock Whitney Center, will leave for a River District headquarters early 2027, deepening uncertainty in a downtown market with high vacancies.  NOLA.com
