- ➤ The Celebrate Canal! Coalition marked a milestone year by hosting eight public events along Canal Street that brought families together and boosted local culture—its Saints Pre-Game Season-Opener Party featured food, music and a ride to the Dome. - ➤ Jon Sumrall and his wife Ginny have joined Son of a Saint as official ambassadors to raise awareness and support programs for fatherless boys in New Orleans— they will work to expand mentorship and mental health services while joining former ambassador Sion James. - ➤ Southwest Airlines has announced that its summer 2026 schedule will add more flights from New Orleans to popular cities including Las Vegas and Orlando. - ➤ Randy Haynie, a veteran Louisiana lobbyist, will be honored for his decades of supporting Louisiana arts at a black-tie dinner on Oct.18 at the Patrick F. Taylor Library, where he and multi-media artist Dawn DeDeaux will receive the 2025 Opus Award. Haynie, a founding board member who helped secure state funds to build the museum in the Warehouse District, has lobbied for major clients since 1980 + his efforts have been key in preserving our art and culture. - ➤ Under Spanish rule, enslaved people in Louisiana could earn money to buy their freedom through a process called coartación—up to 4 percent were freed each year, with women making up most of those released. City workers often had an easier time saving money compared to rural laborers who sometimes had to seek court approval. Verite News

- ➤ LCTCS President Monty Sullivan will retire early next year after more than a decade leading a system that nearly doubled its graduates and expanded workforce programs (he previously served at Delgado Community College). - ➤ Penguins at Audubon Aquarium are using their painting skills today to raise funds for World African Penguin Day.
