  • ToolBank USA opened its New Orleans ToolBank on Oct.15 with a ribbon cutting that brought together city leaders and neighbors to view a new warehouse stocked with tools for nonprofits and disaster recovery. BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Shade Store opened its first New Orleans showroom on Friday, August 8 at 3523 Magazine Street in the Garden District—offering a 1,650-square-foot space with custom window treatments made in the United States. CULTURE NEWS

  • The New Orleans Foundation for Francophone Cultures has launched the Dr. Homer J. Dupuy Grant Program to fund projects that boost Louisiana French, Creole, and Indigenous languages.   • Cuban jazz pianist Victor Campbell will perform at Dew Drop Jazz Hall in Mandeville on Oct. 25—doors open at 5:30 p.m. and music starts at 6:30 p.m. This rising musician, who moved to New Orleans in 2019, blends Cuban rhythms with local jazz styles.  NOLA.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Loyola University completed Uptown Hall—its new, state-of-the-art seven-story residence hall at the corner of Freret and Calhoun that now houses over 600 students in modern, well-equipped suites—after a ceremonial ribbon-cutting led by President Dr. Xavier A. Cole last week. The residence hall, which opened at the start of the school year in August, offers communal lounges, a courtyard, and full wireless internet coverage to support its students.  Biz New Orleans

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson spoke at the Bureau of Governmental Research annual luncheon at Hilton Riverside on Oct 21, urging New Orleans civic leaders to protect institutions that keep power in check. He advised Mayor-elect Helena Moreno and other officials that emphasizing American Revolution lessons could help ease political polarization—reminding them that teamwork is key.  NOLA.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Salmen will visit Slidell for a critical District 7 5A football contest set for 7 p.m. as their offense, led by quarterback Da'John Howard and running back Jimmy Chanzy who helped secure a 35 to 28 win on Oct. 2, challenges a Tigers team that has not won the series since 1991 + a win for Slidell will boost their district play standing.  NOLA.com
  • Southern University fired football head coach Terrence Graves after the Jaguars opened the season with a 1—6 record. Interim head coach Fred McNair will lead the team, and Graves had guided the Jaguars to an 8—5 season in 2024 after taking over in December 2023.  WDSU
  • LSU head coach Brian Kelly is under pressure after the Tigers posted a 5-2 record and have not met expectations, heightening the risk of a costly coaching change with a possible $53 million buyout looming — officials may shift key staff if the season does not improve.
