BUSINESS NEWS

  • After a large explosion fire on Aug. 22 closed Smitty’s Supply in Roseland and led to the shutdown of U.S. 51 and LA 10, the company reopened today with help from Gov. Landry, the DOTD + Tangipahoa Parish officials who cleared ditches and prepared roadways for local residents.  Fox 8
  • The Omni Royal Orleans opened its new coffee shop Fifi Parée—designed with French influences that blend local flavor and honor early aviation history—in the hotel lobby in the French Quarter. Open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the café offers specialty beverages, pastries, and grab-and-go items as part of the hotel's renovation set to finish by early 2026.  Biz New Orleans

  • The Krewe of Boo Halloween parade takes place today at 6:30 p.m.—starting at Elysian Fields and winding through the French Quarter on Decatur Street and Canal Street.  WWL-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Port of New Orleans announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce approved its request to extend FTZ No. 2 into St. Tammany Parish, boosting investment, trade, and job growth in Southeast Louisiana— the zone now covers over 30 designated sites across four parishes.   • A documentary film on New Orleans’ switch to charter schools after Hurricane Katrina will premiere on Oct 27 at 7:45 p.m. at the Broad Theater during the New Orleans Film Festival + it digs into reform efforts and the controversy over school closures and teacher layoffs.  NOLA.com
  • Local schools are hosting a series of open houses for prospective students and their families, with events starting on Oct.29 at Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy and continuing at Morris Jeff Community School, Warren Easton, Willow School, Benjamin Franklin High, and New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy – these events offer campus tours, teacher meetings, and registration details.   • Gov. Jeff Landry announced Oct. 22 that if the shutdown continues, SNAP benefits for nearly 800,000 low-income residents will be paused next month, raising concerns about food insecurity—local food vendors and community groups are already exploring alternative solutions.  Verite News
  • C.C. Antoine served as a soldier, businessman and newspaper editor before being elected Louisiana's 13th lieutenant governor in 1872—his leadership during Reconstruction helped shape state politics.   • Caesars Superdome in New Orleans has been named the most haunted NFL stadium by Pickswise.com—George Rogan noted that its 50-year history and close proximity to St. Louis Cemetery have contributed to its ghostly reputation, and he linked the spooky status to a controversial call during a 2018 NFC Championship game.
