Good morning, New Orleans. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 29th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of the United Cajun Navy are in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa causes dangerous storm surge and power outages; three advanced team members are on the ground with six more scheduled to arrive after the storm passes. The group works with federal officials and airlines to deliver supplies and conduct search and rescue efforts — a limited international response from Louisiana.  WDSU
  • With a Category 5 hurricane set to hit Jamaica tomorrow, local businesses in New Orleans are raising funds to help with recovery efforts. Bywater Bakery is donating 10% of its earnings—while a benefit dinner hosted by Jamaican restaurants was held Tuesday—to support those affected.  WDSU
  • State Sen. Beth Mizell is competing again in the Heroes Who Cook event to raise funds for Hope House, which supports abused children. The 2025 cookoff will take place on Nov 2 at the rooftop of the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center Parking Garage in downtown Covington — local teams of chefs, civic leaders and business owners will compete to boost support for child abuse services.  NOLA.com

This performance reflects the bank's steady focus on relationship banking and local community support.  Biz New Orleans
  • ChillCo Inc. announced that its Lacombe headquarters will expand with a $4.37M investment, adding manufacturing and warehouse space to create 38 new jobs and retain 68 current positions as part of its $8M growth plan. CULTURE NEWS

  • For years, New Orleans gardeners planted milkweed to aid monarch butterflies, but recent studies show the plant — especially non-native tropical varieties — can host OE, a parasite that causes wing deformities. Experts now advise switching to native aquatic milkweed to help reduce the spread of the infection.  NOLA.com
  • Only two named storms—Hurricane Melissa and Tropical Storm Barry—have tracked through the Caribbean or Gulf so far this year, far below the usual average of about six. Experts say unusual atmospheric factors and dry air, despite warm waters, have kept local storm formation low.  NOLA.com
