COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members in Southeast Louisiana have added non-perishables to Halloween candy bowls to help families facing food insecurity as they wait for SNAP benefits amid the government shutdown. Goodwill SELA launched a register round-up campaign that will donate every cent to Second Harvest Food Bank—shoppers at Goodwill stores can round up their purchases through November 30.  WDSU

  • New Orleans business strategist John R. Kerry advises local entrepreneurs to face slow tourism and fewer customers with clear, resilient plans and by partnering with others in the community — his tips stress action over waiting. His advice calls on business owners to adjust with purpose and build local support to overcome challenging conditions.  Biz New Orleans
  • H. Rault Locksmiths on Magazine Street in New Orleans is a working locksmith that also serves as a museum—displaying antique safes, vintage door parts, and historical locks dating back to 1845. Michelle Miller now runs the family business that repairs modern and vintage locks and provides key duplication throughout the city.  Biz New Orleans
  • The Fifth Circuit ruled that two drilling specialists working 12-hour shifts offshore are classified as administrators and are not eligible for overtime, a decision that may extend overtime exemptions for similar roles in the Gulf's oil and gas industry. Employers and workers in the region could see changes in employee classifications as companies adjust to the ruling.  Biz New Orleans
  • Attorney David Rieveschl from Stone Pigman urged new business owners to get a lawyer right away to set up a legal entity, draw up founder agreements, and protect intellectual property. CULTURE NEWS

  • New Orleans will celebrate the holiday season with events including Réveillon dinners that start December 1, a free Thanksgiving parade departing from the Caesars Superdome, and Nola ChristmasFest at the Convention Center from December 20 to 29—highlighting the city’s festive traditions. The 52nd Annual Bayou Classic Football Game will kick off at 1 p.m. on November 29 at the Superdome—preceded by a Battle of the Bands event the night before and a Fan Festival starting at 9 a.m. on game day.  Biz New Orleans
  • New Orleans has been named a UNESCO Creative City of Music after New Orleans and Company partnered with the city and local cultural leaders such as Jon Batiste, Quint Davis, Bruce Sunpie Barnes, and Derrick Tabb to submit the application in March. The designation gives the city a seat with UNESCO and will lead to the Rockin’1000 concert on Jan. 31 — its first U.S. event at the Caesars Superdome.  WWL-TV

  • Dr. Tina Tinney (Nunez Chancellor) represented Louisiana in Salt Lake City from October 20th to 21st when she joined the NLGA Aerospace, Aviation and Defense Committee after being invited by Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser. She joins Shawn Welcome and will help boost the college’s aerospace training and workforce efforts to support growing industry investments.  Biz New Orleans

HEALTH NEWS

  • Editor Kimberley Singletary reported she is making healthier choices after attending New York City’s zero-proof festival last September where over 50 non-alcoholic beverage companies presented their innovative drinks. The N/A market is expected to grow to $5 billion by 2028 — and a new N/A bar has opened on Frenchmen Street, prompting questions if more such venues will appear in New Orleans.  Biz New Orleans
  • Hospitals and universities in South Louisiana are launching hundreds of millions in construction projects to modernize labs and expand children’s facilities—initiatives that will improve patient care. Ochsner, LSU Health, North Oaks, Tulane and Manning Family are planning projects that will finish by 2026, 2027 or early 2028—each set to boost research capacity and outpatient services.  Biz New Orleans
  • Louisiana residents can enroll in or update their health insurance plans today through the Health Insurance Marketplace, with coverage starting Jan 1 if they sign up by Dec 15 and Feb 1 if they enroll by Jan 15. UnitedHealthcare is not offering plans in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines & St. Charles parishes, so current members there must choose a different carrier.  Biz New Orleans
