  • DIAGEO—this year's Bayou Classic sponsor—has supported local events and its free Learning Skills for Life program in New Orleans.  WWL-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Businessman Zahran Bazzar, a Lebanon-born owner with local experience, will take over the century-old Matassa’s Market in the French Quarter on Dec. 4—he plans to restore the store with expanded groceries and fresh meats while keeping its historic charm.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • City Park is now lit with over one million twinkling lights as Celebration in the Oaks has kicked off for the holiday season. Visitors can join a two-mile driving tour for $40 per car or a walking tour for $35 while the fundraiser runs through New Year's Day.  WDSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Taqueria Guerrero on North Carrollton closed its doors yesterday after posting signs that barred Border Patrol agents from entering—Border Patrol will start Operation Swamp Sweep today due to increased agent presence.  WDSU
  • Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill is offering Cyber Monday safety tips today to help online shoppers avoid scammers—she advises checking secure website URLs, using credit cards, and reviewing return policies before making a purchase.  WDSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU Tigers officially hired Lane Kiffin as their new head football coach following weeks of pursuit after Brian Kelly’s firing. The former Ole Miss coach earned a 55-19 overall record and led four 10-win seasons — a record that boosted LSU’s decision to bring him on board.  WDSU
  • The New Orleans Saints elevated kicker Charlie Smyth to the active roster for his NFL debut on Sunday in Miami against the Dolphins—he won a kicking competition against Cade York and replaces Blake Grupe after a disappointing season.  WDSU
  • The Saints lost 21-17 to the Dolphins on Sunday (Nov. 30) as Miami built a 16-0 lead and sealed the win with Minkah Fitzpatrick's interception of a two-point conversion pass from rookie quarterback Tyler Shough. The Saints struggled throughout the game and now sit at 2-10 (1-5 on road).  Fox 8
  • Florida is expected to hire Tulane’s Jon Sumrall as its next head coach after he led the Green Wave in New Orleans to a record of 19 to 7 over the past 2 years—Tulane reached the American Conference championship game in both seasons. Florida hopes his leadership will help the team win future titles.  WWL-TV
  • Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall is leaving the Big Easy for a six-year contract at the University of Florida that pays nearly 7.5 million dollars per year (he posted a record of 19 to 7 in two seasons). Tulane Athletics Director David Harris will soon search for a replacement after the Gators fired head coach Billy Napier (who had a record of 22 to 23 in Gainesville).  WDSU
