COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A group of government, business, and nonprofit partners lowered street homelessness by 24% between January 2024 and July in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish by giving housing and support to people in need. Federal cuts announced on Nov. 13 risk taking away help for more than 3,500 residents and local landlords—sparking local advocates to urge lawmakers to protect these programs.  Biz New Orleans

  • Husband-and-wife culinary veterans Chris and Bonnie Borges opened Charmant on Nov 22 at 514 City Park Avenue in Mid-City— the restaurant blends modern European bistro style with a local twist and offers a curated wine list and creative cocktails for all-day dining.  Biz New Orleans
  • Today, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana launched Tools to Protect Your Business—an online resource that helps local small business owners and employees plan for immigration enforcement and unexpected challenges. CRIME NEWS

  • New Orleans residents gathered on Bourbon Street to honor terror attack victims with a memorial event called the 'second line in the sky' — the tribute reflected local second line traditions and offered a somber remembrance of the loss.  Fox 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Orleans & Company has shared six reasons to visit New Orleans in 2026; the list includes Rockin’ 1000 making its first U.S. appearance at Caesars Superdome on January 31, Mardi Gras parades running from February 6 to 17, tall ships docking from May 28 to June 1, two spring golf events, and the return of the Bocuse d’Or and Pastry World Cup in July. The list also shows that New Orleans is close to many FIFA World Cup host cities, making it a good place to travel this summer.  Biz New Orleans
  • The Historic BK House and Gardens will offer holiday events this December including a pre-Christmas party on Dec. 6 with gingerbread decorating and a visit by Santa, a holiday concert by the Big Easy Boys on Dec. 18, and an open house during the Creole Christmas home tour from Dec. 27 to Dec. 28—advance reservations and tickets are required. BK House also will plan a bicentennial celebration for 2026 and has named Jennifer Gick as its new executive director—she brings 26 years of nonprofit experience.  Biz New Orleans

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Entergy Louisiana broke ground in Richland Parish today to start building two new combined-cycle combustion turbine plants that will add 1,500 megawatts of power to the grid and are expected to create thousands of construction jobs while lowering energy bills for customers (with Meta funding a state-of-the-art data center to support digital growth) and to be completed by late 2028.  Biz New Orleans
  • According to the Downtown Development District’s Q3 2025 Market Report, the BioDistrict in New Orleans (covering about 1,500 acres in downtown and Mid-City) will see significant growth as major investments from Tulane, Xavier-Ochsner, and LSU Health improve healthcare access and spur research innovation.  Biz New Orleans

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Orleans officials approved The Willow School’s plan to fix up the historic Sophie Gumbel House on Loyola Avenue and turn it into a special education center that helps children with learning and health needs. The project includes adding an on-site clinic and therapy services with local university partnerships.  NOLA.com
  • Amy Landry leads Loyola’s Women’s Leadership Academy (launched in 2019 under President Tania Tetlow) that has empowered over 320 women and now enters its eighth cohort as the only university-hosted academy of its kind in the state. She also runs the Young Women’s Leadership Academy and started the International Women’s Day Celebration while serving in local business groups.  Biz New Orleans

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge blocked efforts to dismiss a 1960s school desegregation case in Concordia Parish by rejecting a filing from Louisiana and the Justice Department. The school district and state have appealed the decision and must prove they dismantled segregation—making this the first major test of plans to end long-running cases.  New Orleans City Business
  • As 2025 comes to a close, New Orleans stays hopeful after a year that began with a Super Bowl showcasing our best hospitality—City Hall now faces tough challenges from outgoing officials, and incoming mayor Helena Moreno plans to lead a needed change.  Biz New Orleans

HEALTH NEWS

  • LSU Health New Orleans strengthened its research network — earning major NSF grants on October 1 that included a five-year award to genetics professor Dr. Sunyoung Kim for nanomotor research and a $1.2 million project led by Dr. Michael Dunham for an AI tool to detect tracheostomy tube issues. The institution also received a $7.2 million NIH grant for work at the Alcohol and HIV/AIDS Research Center — a move that boosts its role in innovative biomedical care.  Biz New Orleans
  • Since 2018, the LSU Burn Center at UMC has cut burn patient mortality from about 8% to 4%—a breakthrough achieved by LSU surgeons using dual-trained trauma and burn care. The 16-bed facility meets over 130 standards and serves as the only verified center in the region, supporting research that may improve patient outcomes statewide.  Biz New Orleans
