COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Crescent City Connection glowed gold and white on Sunday, Dec. 14 to honor Keenan Zeno, who would have turned 40; his family released balloons at Woldenberg Riverfront Park after his 2022 passing from lung cancer. Nikita Johnson arranged the tribute through the city's Strategic Engagement + Special Projects.  WWL-TV
  • Parishes across the region are hosting holiday events throughout December, offering family activities such as City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks light tour Nov. 28–Jan. 1, a free Caroling in Jackson Square on Dec. 21, and a boat parade in Golden Meadow on Dec. 20+more local festivities are planned statewide.  WDSU

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Orleans will continue its Hanukkah celebration today (despite a recent attack in Australia) as community leaders confirm the event is secure and set to uphold tradition. Organizers say the festivities will bring light and unity to residents.  Fox 8

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • As a strong cold front brings dangerous wind chills, the LSU Ag Center advises residents to water dry soils and move container plants indoors or cover them to prevent freeze damage. The guidance also suggests mulching ground plants and using small outdoor Christmas lights (safely) for extra warmth.  WDSU
  • New Orleans activated its freeze plan ahead of today's forecasted icy conditions. North Shore communities are advised to prepare & follow officials' guidance to protect residents and infrastructure.  Fox 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • With a blast of cold weather expected overnight Sunday, local officials advise residents to protect their pipes, plants and vehicles by draining outdoor hoses and topping off car fluids before the freeze. Residents driving Monday should recheck batteries and coolant levels after the cold snap.  WDSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Edna Karr won its second state title by defeating St Aug on Dec. 14. The school team extended its winning streak in a hard-fought game.  Fox 8
  • St. Charles Catholic defeated Shaw in an instant classic finish to win the state title on Friday, Dec. 12, and the school also inducted Tracy Porter and Brett Maxie into the Saints Hall of Fame. These achievements mark a high point in the local sports season.  Fox 8
  • Rookie kicker Charlie Smyth kicked a 46-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to give the Saints a 20-17 win over the Panthers at the Caesars Superdome on Sunday, improving their record to 4-10 after a fourth-quarter comeback drive.  WWL-TV
