  • A local group in Union plans to repair 150-year-old St. Mary’s Chapel next year (over $160K has been raised) to fix the roof, replace the doors, and preserve the historic site for weddings, funerals, and occasional Mass in St. James Parish.  NOLA.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in December remain at a five-year low with rates near $2.85 nationally and under $2.50 locally, which benefits holiday shoppers and drivers covering long distances. AAA fuel analyst Don Redman said the lower prices help save money for families.  WWL-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana education standards largely omit Native history, prompting Native groups to push for change. In Terrebonne Parish, the Pointe-au-Chien Tribe reopened a charter school to teach Standard and Louisiana French (which honors Native culture) and offer community-driven learning.  Verite News

  • At Louis Armstrong International, officials say Sunday was the busiest travel day while TSA expects record traffic from now until New Year.   • Allegiance Health System (AHS) and Ochsner Health have signed a letter of intent to affiliate without merging, which will let Ochsner provide advanced telemedicine and technology to improve healthcare in rural communities.
