CRIME NEWS

  • U.S. Marshals expect to capture escaped inmates Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey within weeks + they also arrested Darriana Burton, Groves’ alleged girlfriend, as the search effort winds down.  Fox 8
  • On Sunday morning, an alleged drunk driver crashed into a group watching drag racing in New Orleans East, killing two motorcyclists and seriously injuring two others—one who lost a leg and one fighting for life—while family members decried the incident and questioned the low bond set for the 22 year old driver whose next court date is in August.  WDSU
  • Scott Fredericks, a 58-year-old man from Marrero, was indicted on second-degree murder after he shot 36-year-old Joshua Carter during a family argument in Gretna on March 1—Carter, who was unarmed with his hands up, later died at University Medical Center.  NOLA.com

  • Today the National WWII Museum launched its $300 million Victory’s Promise campaign - celebrating 25 years and beginning a 10-year effort to expand educational programs, renovate its campus with more than $100 million in upgrades, and increase digital access. The campaign aims to reach 5 million K-12 students and 15,000 teachers annually by 2035, securing World War II history for future generations.  Biz New Orleans

  • On Wednesday, a Tulane researcher resigned after she accused university leaders of censoring her work on Louisiana petrochemical pollution and racial hiring disparities—she said the gag order was imposed to protect university expansion plans. A Tulane spokesperson said the school supports academic freedom but declined to comment on personnel matters.  Verite News

  • Entergy New Orleans began upgrading power poles on Tuesday on General De Gaulle Drive in Algiers as part of its Accelerated Resilience Plan—designed to protect the grid from Category 4 hurricane winds. The $100 million project will install over 3,000 storm-hardened poles citywide.  WRNO
  • A new poll shows Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s approval rating dropped to 27% amid voter frustration over street repairs and crumbling infrastructure — a sharp decline that highlights the challenges she faces in the upcoming citywide elections. The survey, conducted from May 27 to June 4 among 800 registered voters, also noted rising approval for law enforcement officials — an indication of shifting public trust in city leadership.  NOLA.com
