🎭 Culture
The Roots of Music (a non-profit that helps young people learn music) bought a permanent campus in Gentilly Woods in June thanks to an anonymous donor.
The new campus will host all programs (including the Marching Crusaders, the Roots Studio Academy, and the Band Instrument Repair Program) and will support music education for New Orleans youth.
Victor Séjour, born in New Orleans, wrote the short story 'Le Mulâtre' at age 20 and is recognized as the first African American fiction writer.
He later moved to Paris—where he became a playwright focusing on themes of racial injustice and revenge—and continued writing until he died in 1874 from tuberculosis.
