Most of the complex was back-of-house space, like offices, workshops and collections storage. After the renovation, the whole site will be open to the public for the first time. One new gallery will hold Watershed, an exhibition of more than 130 original artifacts about New Orleans' role in the story of the United States. Construction is expected to take three years, with the campus scheduled to reopen in 2029.
