If you walk Royal Street often, a big change is coming to 533 Royal St. The Historic New Orleans Collection has launched the public phase of a $35 million capital campaign to restore its original campus. The work will restore seven historic buildings and five courtyards, and add galleries, interactive displays, educational spaces and a historic house museum.

Most of the complex was back-of-house space, like offices, workshops and collections storage. After the renovation, the whole site will be open to the public for the first time. One new gallery will hold Watershed, an exhibition of more than 130 original artifacts about New Orleans' role in the story of the United States. Construction is expected to take three years, with the campus scheduled to reopen in 2029.

  • Raised so far: $30 million, including more than $11 million in private giving
  • Still needed: $5 million
  • Visitor goal: more than 300,000 a year
  • Contractor: Ryan Gootee General Contractors

The Wrap

Photos, an altar and a mariachi band made for a lovely Monday, Nov. 2, in Bywater. Krewe de Mayahuel's annual Day of the Dead procession walked from Mickey Markey Park to St. Roch Cemetery No. 1, where photos of loved ones sat on an altar at the gates and Mariachi Jalisco played. Singing and dancing followed. Beautiful way to remember.
